The monthly meetings serve to educate, inspire and stimulate people
interested in the advancement and growth of woodturning. Talent, skill
level or even owning a lathe are not prerequisites to joining the GWG.
Anyone with an interest in this fascinating hobby is welcome to join.
The meetings are held on the second Sunday of the month at 2pm, at the
Crescenta Valley Park Recreation Center, Dunsmore Ave and Honolulu Ave
in the town of La Crescenta. Please call 714-528-4783 for more
information.
Meetings begin with announcements of woodturning events, contests, gallery exhibitions and other items of interest to members. A featured speaker follows this with topics covering the entire spectrum of turning, from wood selection and preservation to lathe maintenance, chucking, sharpening, photography, finishing, design and many other subjects. Speakers range from our members to internationally known woodturners At every meeting there is an instant gallery showcasing items turned by members in the precedingmonth. Each person who brought something describes their work and answers questions from the audience. Prizes are awarded in both novice and advanced classes. There is also a different challenge each meeting where members bring in works of a specific type such as natural edge, segmented or platter. Prizes are also awarded in this category.
The meetings conclude with a raffle giving members a chance to pick
up a choice piece of wood or a new tool. There is also an extensive library of instructional books and
videotapes for members to take home.
In addition there are Saturday workshops through out the spring,
summer and fall where members get a
chance to get up close and personal with expert woodturners. The
Guild has a new Woodfast lathe from
Craft supplies to use in the workshops. |
